YM's Barrow to tackle Africa?!

Reserve Team Assistant Manager Steve Barrow will dash from the cup game at Molesy this Saturday 20th Oct to make his Mozambique bound flight from Heathrow.  Along with 41 others, he'll be attempting to cycle 600km's over 8 days raising much needed funds for the Macmillan Cancer Support Nurses.

This is Barrow's third significant cycle challenge having conquered Peru in 2006 and Lands End to John O'Groates in 2009.  "The 'experts' reckon this is the toughest challenge that Macmillan do so I am a little apprehensive as the others were hardly a walk in the park.  Work and football commitments have taken over this last six months and whilst not an excuse, it's not left a lot of time for cycle training.  I can be quite bloody minded and reckon I'll be relying on this when the going gets tough out there.  I've had my jabs for yellow fever, typhoid, malaria etc so I'm covered there.  I've not got that much meat on my bones so hoping the lions etc will be more interested in some of my colleagues so that just leaves the knackered knees, dodgy back problems and of course the effects on the bum from 8-10 hours a day in a saddle.  If one more person says "enjoy your holiday" I may refrain from biting my tongue!  On a serious note however, I am really looking forward to seeing a part of the world I've not visited before.  The beauty of doing it on a bike is that you actually get time to appreciate where you are."
